    The Quetzaltenango area and the western highlands include the provinces of: Quetzaltenango, San Marcos, Huehuetenango, Totonicapan, Solola and El Quiche. It is the area with more cultural and ethnic richness in Guatemala. It has also some of the more spectacular natural attractions of the country.

    Quetzaltenango

    The main city of western Guatemala is Quetzaltenango, in the province of the same name, at 206 kilometres west from Guatemala City.

    Quetzaltenango is the metropolis of the Highlands. His people is proud and laborious. Here have been raised many intellectuals, doctors, poets and musicians. Quetzaltenango was head of the Estado de los Altos (Highlands State) in the XIX century, in a brief attempt of independence from Guatemala.

    This city is also home of many industries and has an active commerce.

    Mountains

    The highlands are, how its name suggest, the more rough region of Guatemala and have plenty of mountains, hills and volcanoes.

    Practically from everywhere in the highlands of Guatemala you have splendid sights of mountains and landscapes.



    Cuchumatanes Mountains

    These mountains, the tallest of Central America rise in some points to a height of 3800 masl. Located in the province of Huehuetenango, to reach there, from Guatemala City you take the Panamerican Highway to Quetzaltenango, then take the road to Huehuetenango. Here, non-paved roads lead to the villages of Chiantla, Aguacatan, Todos Santos Cuchumatan, San Juan Ixcoy, San Miguel Acatan, Soloma and San Mateo Ixtatan, all them with indian population and spectacular sights to the mountains.

    Ecological

    The Quetzaltenango and highlands area, which is specially rich in forests, preserve some of the most delicate ecosystems in the country. The indian population, has been since centuries ago, owner of a "cosmovition" that helped them to live in harmony with mother nature. Has been only since the second half of the XX century, that the gradual loss of the traditional values, that "mother earth" have begun to be used in the "white man" way.

    Visitors can, however, enjoy sights of mountains covered with forests, fresh air and healthy ecosystems in most of the area.
