Peten is the biggest province of Guatemala and has many of the cultural as well as the natural attractions of the country.



Mountains

Guatemala is a very rugged country, with many mountains, hills and volcanoes, but some people think that mountains are only in the highlands and the volcanic range of the coast, and that the Province of El Peten is a big plain with altitude 0. This is not enterely true.

In Peten, some areas are plain, but the major part is a series of low raised hills of karstic formation covered with vegetation. Some pyramids of the maya culture have been long time undiscovered because they have been confused with this hills of 25 to 30 metres high.

Besides this not so flat topography, this highest mountains are the Mayan Mountains, located at east of Poptun, near the border with Belize. Some peaks raise to 1012 masl.
