Izabal Lake:
Located at 160 kilometres northeast of Guatemala City, this is the nation's largest lake, measuring 40 km from east to west and 20 km from north to south. It is fed by the Polochic River and is drained by the Dulce River into Amatique Bay of Caribbean Sea.
The lake and it's surrounding area, that includes the Rio Dulce National Park, are attractions of first order for the visitor. There are many touristic facilities in the lake shores and the near villages.
In the beginning of Rio Dulce is the Castillo de San Felipe, an old spaniard fortress built in the XVII century, to defend the coast and the spaniard treasure-loaded convoys that leave the Izabal Lake through the Rio Dulce, in it's way to the Atlantic Ocean and to Spain, from the english pirates that ravage the caribbean coast.
