The Antigua Guatemala has rich ecological environment, but this is threaten by the growing population and the outcoming air and water pollution.
However, you can find this area ecological satisfactory, but if you want to see almost untouched nature, whispering forest and some adventure touch, you can take the route Antigua-Patzicia-Antigua. This will need a 4x4 vehicle and a guide could be a good idea.
The suggested itinerary is:
- From Antigua Guatemala or Guatemala City: Reach to the village of Patzicia over the Panamerican Highway.
- Take the detour to the village of Acatenango, 12 kilometres of non-paved road. You are surrounded by some of the most untouched forest of the Antigua Guatemala area.
- Take the road to the village of La Soledad, at 2392 masl. 8 kilometres of non-paved road. This is the place of departure of the groups that climb the Acatenango volcano, 3976 masl. For the next 10 kilometres you are going to enter the heart of the mountain range that is between the Acatenango volcano and Antigua Guatemala.
- Take the road to Parramos. 15 kilometres of non-paved road.
- Take the road back to Antigua Guatemala. 17 kilometres of paved road.
