Guatemala has been for centuries a ecological paradaise, that today is in danger, due to deforestation of great areas of Peten and several other provinces, and pollution of water and air near Guatemala City and other large towns. Besides this, several National Parks and Reserves preserve the wildlife and forests of Guatemala. You can find some of these reseves in the list below.


National Parks and Reservations:

  • Reserva de la Biosfera Maya
The most extense is the "Reserva de la Biosfera Maya" (Maya Biosphere Reserve), with 1,844,900 hectares. It is located in the north half of the Peten province, above the parallel 17. This reserve is an important refuge of wildlife, as deer, tapirs, jaguars, spider monkeys, raccoons, howler monkeys, toucans, birds of prey and many others species of mammals, birds and also many vegetal species like cedar and mahogany. This area was settlement of the ancient maya culture, whose vestiges are among others, the archeological sites of Uaxactun and Piedras Negras.
